If you notice water coming in from the ceiling, light fixture, or attic area, please follow these steps:

Do not touch or attempt to open any ceiling area where water is actively leaking near electrical fixtures or wiring.
If water is coming through a light or ceiling fan, turn off the switch and avoid using that fixture until maintenance or the roofer inspects it.
If the leak is heavy and you’re concerned about safety, turn off power to that area at the breaker panel.

Place a bucket, bowl, or container directly under the dripping area to catch the water.
Use towels around the base to absorb splashes and prevent floor damage.
If water is spreading across the ceiling, use a small screwdriver or pin to poke a tiny drainage hole where the water is pooling. This allows water to drain into your bucket instead of spreading and collapsing the drywall. (Do this only if it’s safe and water is visibly bulging in the ceiling.)

Keep the area as dry as possible using towels, mops, or a wet/dry vacuum if you have one.
If safe, open windows or use a fan (pointed away from the leak) to improve air circulation and help reduce moisture.

Take clear photos or short videos of the leak area and any visible damage.
Submit or update your maintenance request through your tenant portal immediately. Include the photos, the exact location of the leak, and when it started.
If the rain continues, understand that roofers must wait until the roof is completely dry before inspecting or repairing it for safety reasons.

Once the rain stops, monitor whether the leak slows or stops.
If it continues to drip or ceiling material appears damaged, report this in your work order for follow-up.
