When you move into a new home, it’s important to know where key items are located and how they work. Taking a few minutes now can save you stress later.

🔌 Electrical System

Main Circuit Breaker – Locate your breaker box. If the power goes out in part of the home, check here first.
Resetting a Breaker – A tripped breaker may still look ON. To reset, flip it fully to OFF, then back ON.
GFCI Outlets – Found near sinks, garages, patios, and bathrooms. If an outlet stops working, press the “RESET” button on the outlet.
Tip: Label the breakers (if not already) so you know which area of the house each controls.

🔥 Gas

Gas Shut-Off Valve – Know where this is located (usually outside by the meter). Turn it OFF in emergencies or disasters.
Tip: If you smell gas, leave the home immediately and call your utility company.

💧 Water

Main Water Shut-Off Valve – Usually outside near the front or side of the house. Use this to stop all water flow during major leaks or flooding.
Individual Shut-Offs – Small valves under sinks and behind toilets allow you to stop water to a single fixture.
Irrigation Shut-Off – If your home has landscaping irrigation, locate the irrigation valve. This can prevent unnecessary water loss in case of leaks.
Tip: Test these valves so you know they turn easily before an emergency happens.

⚡ Utilities

Electric & Gas Meters – Find these outside to verify your usage matches your utility bills.
Tip: Take photos of the meters on move-in day for your records.

🍳 Appliances

Oven Cleaning –
If you have a self-cleaning oven, never use spray oven cleaners. They will permanently damage it.
Always remove the oven racks before running a self-cleaning cycle.
Tip: Check your appliance manuals (often available online) to use the right products and settings.

💡 Extra Tips & Tricks

Use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens to control moisture.
Open blinds/curtains for natural light and air circulation.
Replace air filters regularly (per your Resident Benefit Package or lease instructions).
Test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms monthly.
